Abstract

This paper aims at describing the use of language on the internet, especially language terms in chatting. It is claimed that the language terms have an important role for the chatters to make interaction and relationship with each other for certain purposes. The important role of language can be seen from the fact that many chatters use different language styles and speech variations in chatting over the Internet Relay Chat (IRC). The model of IRC communication is a kind of communication media for communication (chatting) by using computer keyboard in writing symbols or "emoticons", and codes (register) in the conversation with other chatters. The writer uses descriptive method combined with socio-pragmatics approach of Grice’s Maxim theories to explain the special terms of language use in chatting. The study was based on the data from 13 speech channels and 10 couples of private speech on mIRC program and YM in Yogyakarta area. Based on the elaboration, the writer has found four criteria of chatting conversation as follows. (1) Chatting has a special term in the use of codes (register) for conveying something to their partners in speaking, such as abbreviations. (2) Chatting has special forms of Emoticon. (3) Chatting has special identity codes and (4) Chatting has special lengthened the words.

Abstract

One of the complex problems in Arabic semantics is the dichotomy of haqiqah and majāz (proper speech vs. figurative speech). This research aims to study the problem in Mu’tazili school, an Islamic school of speculative theology that flourished in the cities of Basra and Baghdad, both in present-day Iraq, during the 8th–10th centuries. The perspective of this school, which absolutized the unity and oneness of God, brought a consequence that Allah is ontologically different and categorically distinct from nature, humans, and material causality and the Qadīm (the Eternal). Any other than Allah, then, is transient or created, including Allah’s kalām or words. From this perspective, Mu’tazili school built their linguistics foundation, including lafadz and its meaning as well as the theory of philosophic dichotomy and majāz. The notion of majāz has been used to overcome the problems of interpretation of Qur’anic verses, which was categorized as mutasyābihāt, known only by Allah. In other words, besides its critical views, majāz, by Mu’tazili school, was a meaning producer of a text, especially the sacred one. This was in accordance their theological point of view, which was also their world of view or ru’yah kauniyah.

Abstract

This paper aims at elaborating the relationship of translation, culture, and identity. Translation is one means of cultural development. It adopts not only from other elements, but also from other culture to be dialogued and equivalented with the target culture. Within this "taking" and "giving" process the identity of a culture is laid. Historically speaking, translation has proved its great role in human civilization since Ancient Greek. Through translation the contact between two cultures can benefit one another in many ways. This contact involves at least two processes; dialogue of language and of thought. One critical issue in terms of cultural development, which is found through out history, is that translation involved a nation in the process.

Abstract

Cosmic nouns in Javanese language are a group of nouns, which refers to astronomic and geographic notion. This research aims at describing its morphologic and syntactic characteristics. This research uses distributional and equivalent method. The data is collected from everyday use of language as well as its variety of the language, literature, and dictionary. The astronomic nouns refer to "sun", "moon", and "star". The geographic nouns refer to ‘location’ and ‘direction’. Morphologically, cosmic nouns can be in the form of simple noun or complex noun from affixation. Some can be reduplicated while others can’t. Some demonstrative and negation of Javanese language can be jointed with cosmic nouns. Syntactically, cosmic nouns can be in phrasal form. The dominant phrasal form, which emerges, has endocentric relation – having center form which is clarified by peripheral form. Based on its references, astronomic and geographic nouns are categorized into specific and general noun. The complexity of cosmic noun is bound to the number as well as distance of the referent noun. The result of this research shows that cosmic nouns have its unique characteristics compared to other nouns.

Abstract

This paper describes a new discipline in applied linguistics studies, computational linguistics. It’s a new model of applied linguistics which is influenced by computer technology. Computational linguistics is a discipline straddling applied linguistics and computer science that is concerned with the computer processing of natural languages on all levels of linguistic description. Traditionally, computational linguistics was usually performed by computer scientists who had specialized in the application of computers to the processing of a natural language. Computational linguists often work as members of interdisciplinary teams, including linguists (specifically trained in linguistics), language experts (persons with some level of ability in the languages relevant to a given project), and computer scientists. The several areas of computational linguistics study encompasses such practical applications as speech recognition systems, speech synthesis, automated voice response systems, web search engines, text editors, grammar checking, text to speech, corpus linguistics, machine translation, text data mining, and others. This paper presents the definition of computational linguistics, relation between language and computer, and area of computational linguistics studies.

Abstract

Danarto’s Rembulan di Dasar Kolam (The Moon Beneath the Pond) tells about a wife’s sacrifice in an unfortunate situation. The wife, is an unfortunate woman whose husband cheats and treats her disrespectfully. Yet, her spirituality endures her in such situation. Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics theory proposes the hypothesis that the analysis of symbol is a guide to the analysis of text, and the other way around. Both must be submitted to a process of metamorphosis or dialectical phenomena. The result of this analysis is the emergence of symbolical meaning in various terms. Rabi’ah becomes a symbol of a wife’s strength. Her wisdom and personality give the way out to her household problems. Her social status as well as gender role is the symbol that religiosity belongs to anyone despite one’s social status. From this character, it can be seen that the knowledge of spiritualism is aimed not only vertically (to God) but also horizontally (to humanity). The title Rembulan or the Moon symbolizes the wife, because, despite her condition- symbolized as the pond-she endures and still gives her shine, like the moon.

Abstract

Language reflects human conceptualization and interpretation of the world. A speaker’s perception of the world is organized or constrained by the linguistic categories his or her language offers, that language structure determines thought, how one experience and hence how one views the world. This paper describes lexicons of ethno-fishery and local wisdom of Bugis language in terms of the speaker’s conceptualization or interpretation of ethno-fishery. The research located in Tarakan, East Kalimantan by selecting farmer community of Bugis people. Spradley concept is used to determine informant. The principle requires that an informant must understand the culture. The interview of informants was performed by using snowballing technique. The data, mostly, are utterances and dialogues and are taken with a camera-phone and also note-taking techniques. The data, then, are verified and classified in its smaller forms, i.e. lexicon. Then, the lexicon was interpreted base on the cultural understanding sense. The result shows that the Bugis language has many lexicons of the water, soil, plant, and shrimp in Bugis cultural category.
